ProTip: Stop Drop and Roll

This is the first and possibly the last time I will write an entry in complete seriousness.
I had to do a massive repack today and give away a near new pair of shoes and a bunch of clothes to the Salvation Army for no other reason than I am an idiot.  I decided to re-pack my bag using the "Military Roll" as described here:  http://riroads.com/travel/how_to_pack.htm and yes - it actually works!  My backpack is now so roomy I'm going to have a party in it later tonight!

Table for one please.

  1. Of the party or the packing?

  2. I tried the roll and didn't like.

I tend to fold then stack. One big win though is keeping shirts that you don't want crinkled in the plastic bags they come back from the cleaners in. Same goes for anything else the cleaners give you back in plastic bags. Makes things much easier to move around in your pack and reduces crinkling, as well as somehow magically making things fit better.

Oh, and if you haven't used it in the last month and you can't see yourself using it in the next month, get rid of it, doesn't matter what it is.

  3. I did try the fold and stack but somehow it didn't have the save quite the same amount of space.

The other good trick is to stuff your spare pair of shoes with your socks.

And the exception to the throw away rule is your winter jacket and scarf if it's summer. Don't throw that one away... :)

  4. Right. Yeah. Always got to keep the winter clothes. Hate that!

  5. I've been trying the fold and stack lately - and while it has the advantage of having less crinkly clothes, it's a lot harder to find what you're looking for. The roll definitely gives you instant access to almost anything in your bag... it's like browsing through DVDs on a bookshelf VS in a stack.

  6. And now in typical James fashion I've devolved to the "scrunch and stuff"....
